The fact that Alexander the Great was the military genius that he was may, in large part, have been due to the training and example of his father, Philip, whose own military skill has been overshadowed by that of his son. This straightforward and clearly structured book focuses entirely on military matters. In addition to describing and assessing, one at a time, the campaigns and battles of Philip and then Alexander, James Ashley also considers the strategies, soldiers, equipment and leadership of the enemies they faced and, in most cases, conquered. The first third of the book examines warfare in general, discussing the armies of the ancient world, siege operations, logistics and naval operations. Drawing on ancient sources and modern scholarship, and supported by maps and battle plans, Ashley reconstructs the nitty-gritty of Philip and Alexander's battles in short, labelled scetions, with some assessment of the generals' capabilities and tactics.
