Cet ouvrage n?est pas une histoire des relations internationales en Grèce, mais une présentation systématique des règles qui régissaient ces relations, aussi bien dans la paix que dans la guerre. Du fait qu?ils constituaient une société culturellement homogène et qu?ils adoraient les mêmes dieux, les Grecs obéissaient à des lois communes qui remontaient pour l?essentiel à l?époque archaïque. Le non-respect des serments et des traités, en particulier, était un crime qui était condamné par l?opinion publique et puni par les dieux. Surtout, la guerre était soumise à des règles reconnues par tous les Grecs et sanctionnées par les dieux, et ceux qui ne les respectaient pas finissaient tôt ou tard par en subir les conséquences.

This volume contains not a history of international relations in ancient Greece, but rather a systematic presentation of the rules that governed the relations - in war as well as in peace. In addition to having a culturally homogeneous society and praying to the same gods, ancient Greeks lived according to common laws that essentially date back to archaic times. Disrespect for oaths and treaties, in particular, was a crime condemned by public opinion and punished by the gods. War was subject to rules respected by all Greeks and sanctioned by the gods, and those who would not respect them would sooner or later have to suffer the consequences. French text
