Born in 1818 in Berlin, Kiepert had been fascinated with geography from childhood and made a life-long career in cartography. His most important set of maps is the Formae Orbis Antiqui, the fulfillment of his desire for a definitive classical atlas. This reprint is the first in more than eighty years, when the last map of the atlas was originally published. It reintroduces an atlas that, despite immense strides in cartography and classical scholarship, has yet to be superseded. This edition consists of a reprint of the twenty-five plates published by Heinrich (and his son Richard, who continued the project after Heinrich's death) and their notes in the original German
