This important and scholarly study is concerned with Spartan history before 490 b.c. The author examines the relationship between Sparta?s constitutional development and her territorial expansion ; the scattered evidence in Greek lyric poets and historians is analysed; and attention is given to relevant archaeological discoveries. Amongst the subjects discussed are the chronology of the Messenian wars, the poetry of Tyrtaios, the date and political activity of the reformer Lykourgos, the rise of the Ephorate, and the formation of the Peloponnesian League. The author shows that the austerity and regimentation traditionally associated with Spartan life had not been imposed by the time of the Persian wars. The book includes an account of the reign of king Kleo- menes and closes with an examination of the evidence for a helot revolt early in the fifth century b.c. Sparta was for long the most powerful Greek state; this history of her rise to dominance offers many original solutions to old problems, and describes with sympathy and insight her political and artistic achievements. Mr Huxley, a former Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, is a Lecturer in Classics at Harvard.
