The primary purpose of this book is to narrate and to analyse the history of the settlement(s) of Greeks and Cypriots in the Far Eastern lands of China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines from 1875 to the recent present. The author states clearly that he seeks to ascertain and categorize the migratory movements of these people in the context of three types of migration which he defines in the following manner: (a) Migratory settlements from Greece and Cyprus set off by economic hardship in Greece, Turkey, as well as by ethnic and religious persecutions in parts of the Balkans and Turkey, and later in the Stalinist persecutions of the ethnic minorities in the Soviet Union (1878-1945); (b) The Interim migration (1945-1985) which involved not only migrations from Greece and Cyprus but also Greek sailors from the massive Greek merchant marine, as well as the Greek settlers throughout China who were expelled by the victorious communist government from 1949 onward, and who relocated in Japan, Australia and the USA. The American military victory and destruction of the Japanese economy offered possibilities for Greek petty merchants in Japan where they encountered Greek-American military officers and soldiers involved in the original occupation of Japan; and (c) Transient (and often ephemeral) migration of professional, management and technological, affiliated with multi-ethnic corporations and with the economic and political institutions of globalization, all of them tended to move on in the call of their professions and competence (1986-2010).
