La monnaie de bronze antique était déjà une monnaie fiduciaire. Elle est née dans le monde colonial vers le milieu du ve s. a.C., puis s?est peu à peu diffusée dans l?ensemble du monde grec et prit une importance croissante dans les échanges aux côtés de la monnaie en métaux précieux. Ses débuts paraissent liés au moins en partie à des transferts culturels avec des populations non grecques et sont à mettre en relation avec les échanges commerciaux et les besoins liés surtout aux guerres. Ils présupposent une évolution des conceptions de la monnaie jusque-là exclusivement en métaux précieux. En outre, des cités réputées pour leur maîtrise dans le travail du bronze, ont été parmi les premières à frapper des monnaies de bronze, ce qui invite à examiner aussi ce matériel comme un produit de la métallurgie, par le biais notamment des analyses élémentaires.

Ancient Bronze coinage already was fiduciary money. It?s appeared in the Greek colonies around the middle of the 5th century BC, then expanded to the rest of the Greek world and took a growing part in the exchanges alongside the precious metal currency. Its beginnings seem to be partly explained by cultural transfers from non-Greek people and are related to commercial exchanges and needs mainly caused by wars. They suppose that an evolution of the conception of coinage, so far in precious metal only, previously occurred. Besides, cities renowned for their ability to fashion bronze are among the first to mint bronze coinage, what suggests considering this artifact also as a product of metallurgy, notably by analyzing its composition.
