Hatshepsut was not the only, but certainly the most remarkable, woman on the throne of Ancient Egypt. Her early reign in particular is marked by several events which not only impacted upon Egypt, but had repercussions far beyond it: for example, the conflict with Thutmosis III, whom she forced from the throne and possibly into exile and her creation of a hitherto unknown religious fervour for the god Amun. Different from most rulers, Hatshepsut revealed her motivations for usurping power and her reactions to the problems she faced in a unique inscription which survived on a rock-cut chapel that she built in gratitude to the goddess Pakhet for saving her from potential devastation by diverting a tidal-wave away from Egypt. Study and analysis of the inscription text led to the thesis that this tidal-wave was created by the cataclysmic explosion of the volcanic island of Thera/Santorini. The early reign of Thutmosis III is also discussed, as is the inscription of a certain Antef, a prominent follower of this king.
