Athanasia : afterlife in Greek philosophy

Author: Adam Drozdek

Series:
Spudasmata, Bd. 137

Eschatological redirection (Eleusis, Orphism, Dionysus). The Milesians. The Pythagoreans. Xenophanes. Heraclitus. Parmenides. Empedocles. Anaxagoras. The atomists. Diogenes of Apollonia. The older sophists. Socrates. Plato. Aristotle. The Old Academy. The Early Lyceum. Epicurus. The Early Stoa. A historical investigation of the problem of immortality and eschatology in Greek philosophy from the Presocratics to the early Hellenistic period. It investigates psychological views of Greek philosophers and their views on the prospects of infinite human existence after death. The view espoused in the book is that the problem of eschatology was, generally, of secondary importance for Greek philosophers. It was an important problem at the dawn of Greek philosophy when a new anthropology was established by three forces: the mystery religion, the Orphics, and the Pythagoreans. A long period of disinterest in eschatology followed (with the possible exception of Empedocles), and the importance of psychology was again recognized by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and the problem of eschatology was investigated anew by Socrates and the Academy.
