The volume contains 20 thematically diverse, English-language contributions from different academic traditions of classical studies and archaeology in seven thematic sections. The geographical scope of the contributions is the entire Roman Empire - from Tarraco to Tomis and from the Danube Limes to North Africa. In addition to general considerations on the essential characteristics of capitals and their administration, the following topics are discussed: How do cities become capitals? Does each province have a capital or several administrative centers? Where did the governor reside? How did governors' seats manifest themselves in architectural terms? How extensive was the governor's staff? How did cities react to the fact of becoming capitals in terms of urban planning? How did capitals develop economically? What trade relations did they have with other cities in the respective province or other capitals? How did capitals react to phases of crisis in the empire and restructuring of the provinces? What influence did administrative centers and the presence of the Roman administration have on the development of art? The broad range of topics and the intensive discussions on administration, urban development and material culture show the continued high relevance of the topic of Roman provincial capitals.
