Author:Colin M. Kraay

Series:
The Library of Numismatics

xxvi, 390 pages, 32 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; 26 cm.

Dr Kraay describes the development of Greek coinage from its beginning in the seventh century BC until its character was decisively changed by the kingdoms which arose out of the empire of Alexander the Great at the end of the fourth century. The book includes 64 black and white plates.

This is the first comprehensive survey of Greek coinage to be published for over forty years, during which time great ad vances have been made in numismatic research and many long-accepted views. have been questioned or overthrown. Dr Kraay describes the development of Greek coinage from its beginning in the seventh century sc until its character was decisively changed by the kingdoms which arose out of the empire of Alexander the Great at the end of the fourth century. Until then the chief characteristic of Greek coinage had been its great variety, for it was produced by a very large number of mostly small, but vigorously independent, communities; cach regarded its coinage as a mark of political independence, and most took pride in the quality and originality of its design.

Dr Kraay has given separate and parallel historical treatment to the coinage of cach geographical area, partly because of the great extent of the Greck world and partly because of the uneven quality of the air- viving listorical sources for different areas and periods. In a number of general chapters he unites these separate themes into a picture of the development and function of Greek coinage, the earliest coinage of the western world, the form of which conditioned that of all later coinages. Wherever possible be integrates the story of coinage in each state into its political history; indeed, the coinage itself stratos and amplifies that history. The test is fully annotated throughout, so the render can follow the most recent discussion of each theme, Dr Kraay has also provided a sub- stantial bibliography. The sixty four pages of plates illustrate more than 1100 coine drawn from a wide range of public collections.
