In the Slave Systems of Greek and Roman Antiquity, the late Professor Westermann has amplified and brought up to date his treatment of ancient slavery which first appeared in the Pauly-Wissowa Real-Encyclopädie der Altertumswissenschaft, in 1935. The work as it now appears is the product of the last twenty-five years of his scholarly activities, which were largely devoted to the study of various aspects of ancient slavery. To this study he brought a wide and deep knowledge of the ancient world, drawn not only from the literary sources but also from more specialized disciplines, such as archaeology, epigraphy, and papyrology. The sections of the book which utilize the documentation of the papyri largely break new ground in the discussion of slavery in Egypt. But Professor Westermann was a historian of broad outlook, not confined to the ancient world, and numerous sections of the book are illuminated by his study of slavery in various places and times in the University Seminars at Columbia University, in cooperation with his colleagues in the Departments of History, Economics, Government, and Sociology. In the last six chapters of the book ? added since the Pauly-Wissowa treatment of the subject ? Professor Westermann has been deeply interested in the relationship of Christianity to slavery.
