Minoische Paläste als multifunktionale Zentren

Die minoischen Paläste waren multifunktionale Zentren, denen auch in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht eine grundlegende Bedeutung zukam. Der Begriff der Redistribution war bisher prägend zur Beschreibung der minoischen Wirtschaft: Man ging davon aus, dass Güter an zentraler Stelle gesammelt und sodann an die Bevölkerung zurückverteilt wurden – auch Grundnahrungsmittel.

Die quantitative Analyse der Vorratsräume in den Palästen und elitären Haushalten der Alt- und Neupalastzeit, also der Mittelbronzezeit und frühen Spätbronzezeit, auf Kreta hat jedoch ergeben, dass die Subsistenzwirtschaft offenbar nicht so sehr in die Umverteilung mit einbezogen wurde, wie wir dachten. Vielmehr dienten die Magazine in Haushalten der Oberklasse der Selbstversorgung ihrer Bewohner und Bediensteten. Auch unter Berücksichtigung der als Getreidespeicher interpretierten runden Gruben, der Kouloures, im Bereich der Westhöfe von Knossos und Phaistos, und ebenso der Getreidesilos von Mallia, bleibt diese Erkenntnis bestehen.

Der Autor
Torben Keßler studierte in Marburg, Perugia und Heidelberg Klassische Archäologie und Vor- und Frühgeschichte. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Ägäische Bronzezeit, Wirtschaftsarchäologie und attische Grabformen.
