Roman architecture was characterised by a rich palette of colours, achieved through the use of natural coloured stones and painting. This conference volume is the first book entirely dedicated to the polychromy of architectural orders in the Roman provinces. Its objectives are to present new data, to explore the visual effects for which colour was used on architectural elements, and to collate observations on the functional, chronological and regional variation. The volume brings together the contributions of twenty-five archaeologists, ancient historians, art historians and chemists, encompassing a wide chronological frame from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD and covering a geographical range from modern Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria to Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Libya.

Roman architecture was characterised by a rich palette of colours, achieved through the use of natural coloured stones and painting. Evaluating the use of colour in Roman architecture addresses an important part of the built environment. Unlike black-and-white photographs or line-art reconstruction drawings, architecture was conceived, perceived and experienced in colour. Although such statements are accepted by most archaeologists and architectural historians today, details about functional, chronological, and regional variation in Roman architectural polychromy remain to be discovered.
This conference volume is the first book entirely dedicated to the polychromy of architectural orders in the Roman provinces. Its objectives are to present new data on raw materials, painting techniques, and traces of paint on architectural orders, to explore the visual effects for which colour was used on architectural elements and to collate initial observations on the functional, chronological and regional variation of the applied colour scheme in the various areas of the Roman Empire.
The volume brings together the contributions of twenty-five archaeologists, ancient historians, art historians and chemists. The collected essays encompass a wide chronological frame from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD and cover a vast geographical range from modern Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria to Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Libya.

Johannes Lipps bekleidet seit 2019 einen Lehrstuhl für Klassische Archäologie an derJohannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und ist gleichzeitig Fellow am dortigen Gutenberg Forschungskolleg. Er studierte Klassische Archäologie, Alte Geschichte sowie Papyrologie, Epigraphik und Numismatik der Antike an den Universitäten Marburg, RomaTre, Bonn und Köln, wo er 2008 mit einer Arbeit zur Basilica Aemilia am Forum Romanum promoviert wurde. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der antiken Architektur, Skulptur sowie Urbanistik und konzentrieren sich besonders auf Rom, Pompeji und die römischen Provinzen von der Zeit der Römischen Republik bis in die Spätantike. Zuletzt veröffentlichte er ein Buch zur „Stuckdecke des Oecus Tetrastylos im sog. Augustushaus im Kontext antikerDeckenverzierungen (Rahden/Westf. 2018)" und edierte u.a. den Band „Die römischen Steindenkmäler in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim (Ubstadt-Weiher 2021)".

Matthias Grawehr ist derzeit Vertretungsprofessor für Klassische Archäologie an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind der Vordere Orient in hellenistischer und römischer Zeit, antike Architektur und römische Kleinfunde wie Lampen und Bronzestatuetten. Er studierte Klassische Archäologie, Kunstgeschichte und Vorderasiatische Archäologie an der Universität Basel. Er hat Ausgrabungen im Nahen Osten durchgeführt und zwei Bände über Ausgrabungen in Petra in Jordanien veröffentlicht: "Die Lampen der Grabungen auf ez Zantur in Petra" (2006); "Eine Bronzewerkstatt des 1. Jhs. n. Chr. von ez Zantur in Petra/Jordanien" (2010). 2019 habilitierte er sich zum Thema "Akzidentelle Unfertigkeiten und intentionaler Bossenstil in der Architektur des Hellenismus und der Kaiserzeit". Matthias Grawehr hat an den Universitäten Basel, Zürich und Mainz gelehrt und ist Mitherausgeber der Bände "Klassik - Kunst der Könige. Könige und griechische Kunst im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr." (2020) und "Wirtschaft und Kulturkontakt in der mediterranen Eisenzeit" (2022).
