Stephen G. Miller, Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkley, has presented us with his 46 years of archaeological discoveries, research, as well as ceaseless efforts to showcase and protect Ancient Nemea. The text, written with directness, sincerity and humor, and lavishly illustrated with 1.800 pictures, takes us from the author?s first on-site efforts to the creation of an archaeological park of about 180 stremmata and the revival of the ancient Nemean Games.

Description
Stephen Miller has presented us with the most significant of his archaeological discoveries at Nemea, a personal autobiography, a social history with many local anecdotes, a description of the creation of an archaeological park of about 180 stremmata with protective fencing and framing cypress trees, the construction of an archaeological museum and the discovery of thousands of ancient artifacts that have gone into it, the revival of the ancient Nemean Games (www.nemeangames.org), the reconstruction of six columns of the Temple of Nemean Zeus to add to those three that have always stood – these are just a few of the results of the author?s life work. His pride is perhaps most obvious as he details the contributions of the local people to the realization of his dream, and their developing pride in their own work as well as his.
He explains how he began his preliminary work in Athens and Berkeley in 1971, and his initial on-site efforts in 1973. He acknowledges that, when he began, he did not think that he would still be at Nemea half a century later, but that history quickly became inevitable. It may not be clear to the reader why a young man from the American Midwest, of Swiss-German ancestry, would spend his life in Greece, beginning in 1967, although Miller seems to think that it had been preordained. But whatever the cause, as we read Nemea and Me, we can be happy that Indiana Miller is now a Greek citizen.

Author

MILLER, STEPHEN G.
Stephen G. Miller was born in Goshen, Indiana, U.S.A., in 1942. He earned an A.B. in Ancient Greek at Wabash College, and a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from Princeton University. After excavations at various sites, including Olympia and in the ancient Agora of Athens, he began his own excavations at Nemea in 1973. During his years in Nemea, he not only made major discoveries such as the stadium where the Nemean Games took place, but also created an archaeological park, constructed and set the displays for an archaeological museum, and began reconstruction of the ancient Temple of Zeus. At the same time he served as Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of California at Berkeley, except for the years from 1982–1987 when he was Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
His publications include many books and articles about his discoveries at Nemea, e.g. Nemea II: The Early Hellenistic Stadium (University of California Press 2001), and he is also the author of non-Nemea books such as The Prytaneion: Its Function and Architectural Form (U.C. Press 1978), Arete: Greek Sports from Ancient Sources3 (U.C. Press 2004), Ancient Greek Athletics (Yale University Press 2004), and The Berkeley Plato (U.C. Press 2009).
He has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens, decorated by the President of the Hellenic Republic as Commander of the Order of Honor, recognized as “Person of the Week” by the U.S. television company ABC in 2004, and received Greek citizenship by decree of the President of the Greek Republic in 2005.
