Die Kirchen der Dunklen Jahrhunderte, der Zeit zwischen Spätantike und Mittelalter, wurden lange Zeit recht stiefmütterlich behandelt. Zwar hat man sich schon früh für die in dieser Zeit vollzogenen nachhaltigen Veränderungen interessiert und nach deren Ursachen geforscht, doch wurden die Bauten stets isoliert und unter rein gattungsimmanenten Kriterien untersucht. Diesem Desiderat ist ein an der LMU München gehaltenes Kolloquium entsprungen, dessen gesammelte Beiträge in diesem Sammelband nun vorliegen. Thematisiert werden neben bauarchäologischen Befunden auch historische, urbanistische sowie raumsoziologische Fragestellungen.
