After the death of Pericles, a new breed of politicians men like Cleon, Cleophon, and Hyperbolus came to power in Athens. Rejecting the traditional source of political support, the bonds of friendship (philia), in favor of direct appeals to the people (demos), they signaled the emergence of a new pattern of politics. W. Robert Connor traces the development of this new pattern often misunderstood, often branded "demagogy" by both ancient and modern writers by investigating the nature of political and social organization in Athens and the vocabulary of Greek politics. The first two chapters he devotes to an analysis of the traditional pattern of personally based politics, showing that until the last years of Pericles life (to 429 b.c.), "whoever would understand Athenian politics must understand Athenian friendship." Against this backdrop, Professor Connor projects the changes which the demagogues introduced into the style and substance of public life in Athens. He analyzes the use of such terms as "party," "demagogue," "conservative," and "radical" and draws material from the plays of Aristophanes and Euripides, classical biography, and historical reports to document the emergence of a new style of political rhetoric and the mobilization of a new kind of political power in fifth-century Athens.
