arthago war die antike Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen See- und Handelsmacht in Nordafrika, nahe dem heutigen Tunis in Tunesien. Seit 1974 besteht ein internationales Forschungsprogramm unter dem Patronat der UNESCO, das der Rettung noch nicht überbauter Freiflächen im antiken Siedlungsgelände gilt. Die in diesem Rahmen stattfindenden deutschen Ausgrabungen und Aufarbeitungen sollen vor allem topographische Fragen zur Geschichte der Stadt klären, deren phönizische Anfänge ins 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr. reichen und die bis in früharabische Zeit besiedelt war. Die Karthago-Reihe veröffentlicht die Grabungsergebnisse mit Untersuchungen zu einzelnen Monumenten und Fundgruppen als Dokumentation der Entwicklung Karthagos von einer phönizischen Siedlung zur internationalen Handelsmetropole und späteren Existenz als römische Colonia Iulia Karthago.
